- the transition to “all-IP” technology, i.e. all digital data will be exchanged and transmitted via Internet protocols, allowing for more efficient production and timely rollout to the consumer;
- ubiquitous media consumption independent of the device and the location of consumption; and
- the increase in immersiveness due to new image and sound quality – entering virtual worlds promises new experiences.

This is reflected in the development of new codecs that not only allow for optimized production workflows, but can also transmit content with additional objects or information to the end user in top quality.

Virtual Reality is one of the most appealing and promising new experiences when it comes to enjoying media content. The interactive selection of the view provides more than audio and picture – especially for all users who have grown up with Star Trek and computer games.

Advances in image sensor technology provide higher resolution, a wider color gamut, or higher sensitivity, which allows for better capturing of real scenes. New display technologies enable better reproduction and smaller dimensions. 360 degree capturing combined with 3D audio takes the user into the scene. Computation of high data volumes is possible even in smartphones.

By combining VR content with binaural rendering from object-based audio, the realism will be intensified. What is more, the viewer can navigate through the scene, and interact with objects or content in the VR world. With 360 degree the viewer can turn his or her head to the left and to the right, up and down. New production technologies, e. g. light-field, even extend these three dimensions of freedom to six and allow the viewer to move forward and backwards or step to one or the other side, too.

The future of media is immersive, flexible and mobile.

The ever-increasing media convergence demands new, comprehensive technologies and standards due to the complete digitization of all areas of media. Today, it is important to keep an eye on all media formats to ensure optimized work processes.

With developments and products for 4k/60 fps, HEVC, and MPEG-H for the television of the future, we offer solutions for the implementation of an entirely new picture and sound quality for TV and mobile devices. Second-screen applications in HbbTV applications for home use are just as important as surround sound with CINGO on tablets and smartphones. We will also show this picture and sound quality for virtual glasses systems that allow the viewers to immerse themselves in films in a way that seems realistic. We demonstrate mobile production and reporting systems for the creation of shots on location and almost in real time.

The focus for production is on recording procedures that offer new potential for post-production. IMF-based work processes that can be used for exchange during production and as an ideal source format for all other distribution formats are becoming more and more important. Light-field recording and processing increase the opportunities – well-known in CGI – now also for the recording and alteration of real scenes. Additional views and depth information can be used at any time for changing scenes or for virtual backlots.

Digital media technology makes a lot of things possible that were unthinkable justspatial sound even for portable devices and uninterrupted enjoyment of media – regardless of location, time, or end device – are prepared and are available for our living rooms of our homes. The trend continues towards ever-better definition, more dynamic color, and higher frame rates in order to increase picture quality even furthercolor, and higher frame rates in order to increase picture quality even further.

“Immersiveness” in the image and audio sector is a trend made possible by new means of production using multi-camera systems and special 3D audio technology. A single recording can now contain several views of an image or several sound objects. This opens up new creative opportunities in the editing stage that come later. The results from the Spatial-AV project, in which these technologies were developed and implemented will be shown at IBC 2014.

The trend in digital media is toward higher resolution, higher frame rates and toward new, flexible recording techniques in media production. Encoding techniques like High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) and High-Efficiency Advanced Audio Coding (HE-AAC) are solutions that can offer high-resolution images and multi-channel audio for mobile user devices despite limited bandwidth and a large number of users.

There is demand for image and audio technologies that surpass stereoscopic 3D video. Promising approaches using camera arrays allow creation of many different perspectives (free-viewpoint TV) from a single recording of a scene.

We are therefore dedicating a special section of this edition to the topic of new camera technologies.

3D is here to stay, both in movie theaters and in our living rooms. However, ther is still a need for technologies that simplify 3D production and make it cheaper while helping provide viewers with the prefect media experience, in visual and auditory terms.

This is why the industry is seeking to refine new 3D related methods and technologies. This includes constantly optimzing recording and production processes for stereo 3D, panoramic and multi-view video or 3D audio as well as HFR, HDR or the lightfield technology.

When it comes to transmission of content there is also a need of new coding methods such as HE-AAC or HEVC. These methods effienctly encode high-resolution images and multi-channel audio for adaptive streaming, even if the number of users and devices is increasing.
